After death in 1900 Gottlieb Daimler business on production of cars son Paul and the engineer Maybakh continued it. All management of firm was assumed by Wilhelm Maybach, faithful assistant Gottlieb Daimler . In 1900 he started developing the new car. It had a classical arrangement of parts — the engine and a radiator settled down a head under a cowl, the drive was carried out through a gear transmission on back wheels. On the new car there was the 35 h.p. 4-cylinder motor. The first sample was executed in the form of the double racing car Model Mercedes, in honor of the daughter of one of co-owners of the company — the Austrian businessman, the diplomat and inveterate racing driver Emil Ellinek was called. On this car of the improved design on the next races in March, 1899 Ellinek won a victory, having glorified for the whole world Daymler firm and the name "Mercedes". From now on all cars of Daymler firm began to be issued under the Mercedes brand. First Mercedes formed base for creation of more perfect car "Mercedes Simpleks" which has opened an era of the most powerful and comfortable cars of this brand.
